Handcrafted Stone

“I explore myriad life forms through my sculptures. Images often appear in my dreams and meditations; then I search to find the stones that conceal them. My work these days is small, intimate and handheld. Each unique carving is a statement about the infinite ways that life manifests itself on earth. Stone carving opens me to the timelessness of the natural world and, after 40 years, has fashioned me as well.”
Over 500 of my carvings and mosaics have sold, and my work resides in half a dozen Zen temples, the Provincetown Art Museum, and many private collections.
A former Dharma teacher with the Kwan Um Zen School, Ellen invites you to join her daily 4 pm meditation practice. Sidor Studio is cozy and well-lit, featuring a wood stove and a large worktable, located in the farmlands just outside Ithaca, New York, at 189 N Applegate Road. Instructions in soft stone craft will be available in the spring to individuals and groups up to ten people, including kids six and over who can handle small tools. The cost will be $20 per group. Fill out the contact sheet if you want to receive a notice of these events.
